Up to 1 500 spectators watched two of the world's top three men's wheelchair players go head-to-head and it was Houdet who struck first to take a 3-1 lead. However, Ammerlaan hit back to take the next five games and the first set.
Ammerlaan carried his momentum in to the second set as he opened up a 4-1 lead, but Houdet then found his form and led 5-4 before the set went to a tiebreak. The French player forced Ammerlaan in to an increasing number of errors and dominated the tiebreak, but Ammerlaan regrouped to take a 4-2 lead in the deciding set. Houdet put in another determined effort to come back, but could never get back in front and Ammerlaan sealed a 63 67(1) 63 victory to extend his advantage over Houdet in NEC Tour head-to-heads to 11-4. Eight players in total took part in the competition. The event, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, was the first ever wheelchair tennis tournament to take place alongside Rotterdam's ATP Tour event. For more information click here. |
