The joint declaration sets the seal on EU support for EPC following the award of a major two-year grant to the committee to develop Paralympic sport in Europe earlier this year.
“Sport plays a key role in the physical and social rehabilitation of people with disabilities and goes a long way towards integrating disabled people into society”, said Commissioner Figel, while Enrique Sánchez-Guijo stated “the visit by Ján Figel to the Paralympics and the signing of the joint declaration today is testimony to the high profile held by Paralympic Sport within the European Union and the European Commission.”
“Paralympians show the extraordinary achievements that people with disabilities are capable of. This is an example not only for the persons with disabilities but for us all”, according to Figel. Commissioner Figel today had to opportunity to experience a number of Paralympic sports in the company of the EPC President before putting his signature to the declaration.
Following the signing ceremony, EPC and the European Commission will welcome guests at a joint reception at the European Commission HQ in Beijing. Athletes, representatives and dignatories from many European countries have confirmed their attendance. More news on the reception will follow on www.europaralympic.org.
