12-05-2008Beijing in sight as Paralympic World Cup comes to a close
With over 400 competitors from 45 countries competing for 175 medals across four sports, the city and record crowds that gathered for this year’s Paralympic World Cup in Manchester, United Kingdom, were given a real preview of the Paralympic Games later this year. And once again, the athletes on show rose to the occasion to deliver in true style.

The first four days of competition at the Regional Arena were dominated by wheelchair basketball which climaxed with two superb finals, won by the Dutch women and American men. The Dutch were convincing throughout the tournament, beating China in both their opening group game and then the final while the Brits won bronze with a 57-34 score over Brazil.

In the men’s competition Great Britain got off to a flying start by beating the Americans 58-51, but they were unable to repeat the performance when the two sides met in the final with the States thrilling the crowd in a close 60-58 encounter.  Germany completed the medals by beating Sweden 73-48 to claim bronze.

As ever the cycling saw a number of world records fall, predominantly to the British team and in doing so claimed an impressive haul of nine golds, with Anthony Kappes, Aileen McGlynn, and Darren Kenny each achieving double glory.

But one of the headline grabbing stories surrounded visually impaired three-time Paralympic Judo gold medallist Simon Jackson, who only took up the sport three weeks ago. Jackson scooped silver behind Kappes in the tandem in 1.04.982 minutes.

In the pool at the Aquatics Centre, all eyes were on Natalie Du Toit after she qualified for the Olympics last weekend at the Open Water Swimming Championships and she duly lived up to her billing when she was crowned 100m freestyle champion.
