July 29th 2008 marked the 60th anniversary of the first Stoke Mandeville Games, held at the famous National Spinal Injuries Centre at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Great Britain and considered to be the forerunner of the current Paralympic Games.

EPC is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Yuri Sasson as Chief Executive Officer. Mr Sasson, who took up his position on July 1st, will provide professional and full-time support to the committee and manage the new HQ and office in Vienna.

The European Paralympic Committee and the European Commission will host a joint reception at the 13th Paralympic Games in Beijing, China. The reception will take place at the headquarters of the European Commission Delegation in the Chinese capital on Monday 8th September at 6pm.
21-07-2008EPC announces major support from European Union
EPC has announced it is to receive major backing from the European Commission for 2008 and 2009. The committee has been awarded an EU grant to cover ordinary running and operating expenses as part of the "Europe for Citizens" programme, aimed at promoting active European citizenship for the period between 2007 and 2013.
18-07-2008Staff member recruited for Vienna EPC HQ
EPC now has support from a full-time staff member selected to work at the committee’s new office and HQ in Vienna, Austria. Ms. Saskia Kanfer, a native of Vienna, has been recruited to take up a position offering administrative support to EPC.
15-07-2008New EPC HQ in Vienna set to open
EPC has now been presented with the keys to its new office and headquarters in central Vienna. On July 1st the Austrian government handed over use of the 95 square metre premises, located in the centre of Vienna opposite the State Opera House, to the committee.

Dutch pairing Robin Ammerlaan and Ronaid Vink won the 2008 Wimbledon Gentlemen's Wheelchair Doubles Event last weekend with a 6-7(6) 6-1 [6-3] victory over Frenchmen Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer.

Blind and partially sighted footballers and goalball players are in action at two IBSA events in Madrid, Spain, and Pajulahti, Finland. Eight men’s teams line up in Finland to compete in the IBSA European Goalball Championships 2008 Group B, while the 1st International Blind Sports Tournament in Goalball and Futsal Madrid 2016 is underway in the Spanish capital.

A recent survey shows 69 per cent of the UK public would like to see more media coverage of Paralympic sport. Ninety-three per cent of those polled believe Paralympic athletes are good role models for young people. The survey, carried out on behalf of the London 2012 Organising Committee, showed that Athletics, Basketball and Swimming topped the list of sports that the public associate spontaneously with the Paralympic Games. There was also high awareness of Archery, Shooting and Table Tennis.

The landmark United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities opens today for signature by member states and regional organisations at UN HQ in New York.
