01-08-2008	60th anniversary of Stoke Mandeville Games

July 29th 2008 marked the 60th anniversary of the first Stoke Mandeville Games, held at the famous National Spinal Injuries Centre at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Great Britain and considered to be the forerunner of the current Paralympic Games.

28-07-2008	EPC appoints Chief Executive Officer

EPC is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Yuri Sasson as Chief Executive Officer. Mr Sasson, who took up his position on July 1st, will provide professional and full-time support to the committee and manage the new HQ and office in Vienna.

23-07-2008	EPC and EU to host joint reception in Beijing at Paralympic Games

The European Paralympic Committee and the European Commission will host a joint reception at the 13th Paralympic Games in Beijing, China. The reception will take place at the headquarters of the European Commission Delegation in the Chinese capital on Monday 8th September at 6pm.

21-07-2008	EPC announces major support from European Union

EPC has announced it is to receive major backing from the European Commission for 2008 and 2009. The committee has been awarded an EU grant to cover ordinary running and operating expenses as part of the "Europe for Citizens" programme, aimed at promoting active European citizenship for the period between 2007 and 2013.

18-07-2008	Staff member recruited for Vienna EPC HQ

EPC now has support from a full-time staff member selected to work at the committee’s new office and HQ in Vienna, Austria. Ms. Saskia Kanfer, a native of Vienna, has been recruited to take up a position offering administrative support to EPC.

15-07-2008	New EPC HQ in Vienna set to open

EPC has now been presented with the keys to its new office and headquarters in central Vienna. On July 1st the Austrian government handed over use of the 95 square metre premises, located in the centre of Vienna opposite the State Opera House, to the committee.

10-07-2008	Dutch pair takes Wimbledon wheelchair tennis title

Dutch pairing Robin Ammerlaan and Ronaid Vink won the 2008 Wimbledon Gentlemen's Wheelchair Doubles Event last weekend with a 6-7(6) 6-1 [6-3] victory over Frenchmen Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer.

The International Federation of Disabled Sailing (IFDS) world championships in the challenger class are set to begin in earnest today at the Cascais Sailing Club in Portugal.

Thirty-five people representing four countries – Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Scotland - will gather this weekend in Berlin, Germany, for blind futsal seminars held as part of the UEFA-funded IBSA Futsal Development Project Europe.

Ten countries are gathering in Adana, Turkey, to compete in the IWBF Under-22 European Wheelchair Basketball Championships over the coming days. Young players from Belgium, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, along with hosts Turkey, will face each other in the competition.

Blind and partially sighted footballers and goalball players are in action at two IBSA events in Madrid, Spain, and Pajulahti, Finland. Eight men’s teams line up in Finland to compete in the IBSA European Goalball Championships 2008 Group B, while the 1st International Blind Sports Tournament in Goalball and Futsal Madrid 2016 is underway in the Spanish capital.

Football for players with disabilities will be showcased at the quarter-final stage of the upcoming UEFA EURO2008 championships in Austria and Switzerland. Four exhibition matches featuring different disability groups will be played before the quarter final matches in Basel and Vienna.

21-05-2008	Survey shows Britons want to see more Paralympic sport

A recent survey shows 69 per cent of the UK public would like to see more media coverage of Paralympic sport. Ninety-three per cent of those polled believe Paralympic athletes are good role models for young people. The survey, carried out on behalf of the London 2012 Organising Committee, showed that Athletics, Basketball and Swimming topped the list of sports that the public associate spontaneously with the Paralympic Games. There was also high awareness of Archery, Shooting and Table Tennis.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced that the fifth VISTA Conference will be held in Vancouver, Canada, from 22 to 26 March 2009. The Conference will follow the Chef de Mission Seminar for the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games, to be held in Vancouver from 19 to 21 March 2009.

European boccia players have been extended an invitation to participate in the 2nd Singapore Invitational Boccia Championships in July 2008. The award was presented by Laureus World Sports Academy members Ilie Nastase and Marcel Desailly at a ceremony held at the Mariinsky Concert Hall in St. Petersburg, Russia.

With three months remaining before the 17th European Wheelchair Basketball Championships, the full match schedule has been confirmed. The IWBF Europe flag will be raised in the 4000-capacity Rittal stadium at the opening ceremony on Saturday August 25th before the action gets underway with the opening fixture between the German male national team and three-time European champions Israel at 18:15. The landmark United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities opens today for signature by member states and regional organisations at UN HQ in New York. More than forty countries have already committed to sign the convention, the first to be adopted by the UN in the 21st century, meaning it will come into force almost immediately.

The European Commission has now launched its public consultation on the role sport plays in Europe as part of the drafting process for a White Paper on Sport in Europe. The European Handball Federation has developed a wheelchair version of the sport to enable people with a physical disability to play the game. Wheelchair Handball, presented as part of the federation’s “Wheels on Fire” project launched in September 2006, aims to open up the sport to athletes with disabilities by adapting handball rules.

The European Disability Forum (EDF), which EPC joined last year, has launched a major campaign called “1million4 disability”. The aim of the campaign is to gather the signatures of at least one million European citizens in an effort to combat and outlaw discrimination against European citizens with disabilities in all fields of life, including access to sports and sports facilities.
