In 2004, the European Paralympic Committee (EPC) initiated this two-year project as co-ordinating organization. The PSD aims to raise awareness and understanding in elementary schools about sport for persons with a disability. The project was made possible by a grant from the European Union (EU).
The partner organizations involved in the PSD Project were:
European Paralympic Committee
Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium
University of Olomouc, Czech Republic
University of Mainz, Germany
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece
Latvian Disabled Children’s and Youth Sport Federation, Latvia
Swedish Development Centre for Disability Sport, Sweden
The partners co-operated on a national level with an elementary school, an institute of higher physical education and a sports federation for people with a disability. Together, they implemented an educational programme (a Paralympic School Day or PSD) in elementary schools for one full day. Five PSDs were carried out in each nation. During the PSD, elementary school teachers went through a theoretical and practical vocational training seminar.
A PSD resource kit, including all educational material used and a vocational training manual, has been produced to enable European countries to implement the programme in their schools in the future. EPC is also making the resource kit available to countries from outwith Europe that wish to carry out PSDs.
This multicultural project will change the attitudes of youth towards persons with a disability and provide an advocacy tool for elementary school teachers to use. To obtain a DVD copy of the PSD resource kit contact info@europaralympic.org. |
